How to Make a Money Bouquet for Graduation (Step-by-Step)
A money bouquet is one of the most-requested graduation gifts of the year — it looks stunning, it's practical, and a new graduate will remember it long after the cap toss. The good news: you don't need a florist's training to build one. With the right craft supplies and about an hour of time, you can put together a money bouquet that looks like it came out of a high-end gift shop.
What you'll need
- 10–20 crisp bills (any denomination — singles look just as full as larger bills)
- Floral wire or bamboo skewers (one per bill)
- Clear tape or small floral pins
- A bouquet frame or a small bunch of floral foam
- 2–4 sheets of premium wrapping paper (waterproof finishes hold their shape best)
- 1–2 yards of ribbon in a color that matches the school
- Optional accents: rhinestones, small plushies, butterflies, or a graduation cap charm
Step 1 — Fold and mount the bills
The classic look is a simple accordion fold: fold each bill into roughly six even sections lengthwise, then pinch the middle and fan the top and bottom open. Tape a floral wire or skewer to the back of each folded bill — keep the tape low so it's hidden inside the bouquet. Repeat until all your bills are mounted.
Step 2 — Build the base
Place a small block of floral foam inside your bouquet frame or wrap it in a single sheet of paper to form a sturdy cone. The foam is what holds your stems in place and keeps the bouquet from collapsing during transport.
Step 3 — Arrange the money
Start in the middle and work outward in a slight spiral. Place the tallest bills in the center and angle the outer bills down and out. Step back every few stems — money bouquets look best when there's depth and the dollars aren't all on the same plane.
Step 4 — Add accents
This is where the bouquet stops looking like cash on sticks and starts looking like a real gift. Tuck in a couple of small plushies, sprinkle rhinestone picks through the bouquet, or add silk butterflies on long stems. Less is more — three to five accent pieces is usually enough.
Step 5 — Wrap and tie off
Cut your wrapping paper into a large square. Place the bouquet diagonally, then fold up one corner, then the other, overlapping at the base. Cinch tightly at the stem with floral tape, then hide the tape under a wide ribbon bow. Pearl-bow accents look especially elegant for graduations.
Quick styling tips
- Color match the school. Two-tone paper in the school colors instantly elevates the gift.
- Include one larger bill in the center. Visually it anchors the bouquet and signals "this is more than ones."
- Add a small card on a pick. Tuck a folded note between the bills so it's a surprise.
